Devotion Of The Day

James 1:2-4 (NIV) 2Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

This must certainly sound strange to most ears, joy in the face of trials. James explains that we should be joyful because the testing of our faith develops a quality of character in our life that is like that which Christ exhibited, perseverance. Without that quality, our effectiveness for the Lord will end when the going gets tough, and it will get tough. That is why the Lord allows the trials of many kinds to come our way.

Trials are like an old method of growing winter rye. When it sprouted, the farmer would tramp on it to keep it from growing. This caused the roots to grow deeper, finding more nourishment. It also kept the rye from maturing too quickly and freezing.

God is more concerned about your preparation for eternity than He is about your temporal happiness. He is making you into a mature and complete Christian, one who lacks nothing. The training process is not easy. Solid growth comes through difficult conditions.

Do you feel tromped on? Are you wondering why it is so hard when you are still so young in Christ? Trust the Great Farmer. He is working something into your life that you desperately need if you are going to produce fruit. It is the only path to maturity. So don't complain, be joyful! God has a plan for your life. This trial is for a glorious purpose. You need it. You will learn more quickly when you recognize that it is a necessary process for your growth.

Meditation: The trials in my life are developing Christ-like character. That is a reason for joy in the midst of them.

Devotion For The Day

Hebrews 2:14,17-18 (NIV) 14Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death–that is, the devil–

17For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. 18Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

...

It is important for us to understand that Jesus was all man. That does not change the fact that He was all God, but in every way He was made like us. He was one of us. He had flesh and blood. He had Mary's lineage. He was tempted. He had to endure just like we have to endure.

When Adam lost the dominion of earth to the devil in the Garden, God promised the offspring of the woman would one day crush that devil's head, his authority. That offspring had to be flesh and blood to take back what flesh and blood gave up. He is the Second Adam in that He took back what the first Adam lost. The sin of the first Adam brought death to all. The Second Adam came and provided life to all, by destroying him who held the power of death.

As a man enduring all the temptations and sufferings that we face, He can give the perfect counsel. He faced the same things and yet came through in sinless victory. What better priest could we hope for? All others have failed like us. How can we be sure of the answers they give us? But Jesus became the merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, giving us God's direction and presenting our requests to God. As He intercedes, He can convey our feelings and difficulties in complete harmony with how we mean them, because He has been where we are. That is why He is the one person that can help you in whatever your need is. He is the One that can perfectly understand your heart and present it to God with mercy and faithfulness. He made it possible through the atonement that He provided in His flesh and blood body.

Consider: When you pray, understand that He knows exactly how you feel.

Yummy....

Double Chocolate Zucchini Bread

DSC_2415
This bread is the bomb.  Pardon my cheesy word choice (I promise I haven’t said that since middle school, maybe), but I’ve seriously never had such rich, chocolate-y zucchini bread in my life.  I tried two recipes: one from Joy of Baking and the other from Taste of Home… this was the winner.
It’s quick to throw together and even faster to disappear if you have a hungry boyfriend and roommates like I do.  This is the third loaf I’ve made since Christmas… I highly recommend it!
Double Chocolate Zucchini Bread
Makes one 9×5 loaf
1 1/2 cups zucchini, shredded
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup canola oil
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
2 eggs, room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup dark chocolate chips (I found that mini chips work best)
Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray a 9×5 loaf pan with cooking spray (or grease with butter/shortening).
In a mixer, combine your oil, sugars and vanilla. Mix in your eggs and shredded zucchini. In a separate bowl, sift together your flours, salt, cinnamon, baking soda and baking powder. Slowly add this dry mixture into your wet mixture. Beat until combined. Mix in your chocolate chips.
Scrape your batter prepared loaf pan, and bake at 350 degrees for 55-65 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted into the center. Remove from oven and cool in pan for 10 minutes before cooling on a wire rack.

Crafts lets have fun

Article by: Lisa Carroccio The Domestic Diva
DIY: TULLE GARLAND TUTORIAL
featured_on_opt_120
xmas
I’ve always used tulle when decorating my Christmas tree. It’s the secret to making a cheap tree look full. Basically, I’d “stuff” the tree with tulle and call it a day. However, this year since I now have a full pre-lit Christmas tree, I needed to somehow find a way to incorporate tulle into my tree. What better way than to Tulle Garland?!
tullegarland2 All you need is a serger and a few rolls of 6 inch tulle in whatever color you like. The color choices are endless. I used 4 rolls (100 feet each) of “Old Gold Shimmer” tulle. Tulle rolls are sold in increments of 25, 75 and 100 feet. Be sure to buy as much as needed or you’ll be making additional trips to the craft store like I did.

Serger Settings:
4-thread overlock
Gathering Serger Presser Foot (if you have one)
Left and Right Needle Tension = 8
Upper and Lower Looper Tension = NORMAL
Stitch Length = 5 (or highest available setting)
Differential Feed = 2 (or highest available setting)
Note: You can use a sewing machine to gather your tulle, but the serger makes it a fast project…and I’m all about speed.

tullegarland3

With the roll of tulle in front of the machine, on your lap or on the floor (like I do), fold tulle in half as it comes off the roll (folded edge to the left). Use your right hand to guide tulle through the serger cutting off 1/4 inch. With your left hand, place two fingers behind the presser foot to prevent the tulle from feeding freely.

tullegarland1

This helps the tulle gather even more. When your fingers can no longer hold the tulle from behind the machine, let it go. Repeat until you’ve gathered all your tulle needed.

tullegarland4

Once you’ve gathered all your tulle, you’ll need to “poof” it by separating the two layers of the tulle.

This is what 400 feet of gathered tulle garland looks like. Just enough to decorate a 7 foot Christmas tree. Total cost…under $15! Being the envy of all your friends…priceless!

Devotion of the day

2 Timothy 4:1-3 (NIV)
1
In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will
judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I
give you this charge:...
2
Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of
season; correct, rebuke and encourage–with great patience and careful
instruction.
3
For the time will come when men will not put up with sound
doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a
great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

Paul knew the anointing and calling upon Timothy's life. He also knew
Timothy could be timid and hesitant to share. That may be why he gave him
this charge while declaring that it was before God the Judge and the soon to
appear Christ and His kingdom.

He entrusted Timothy with the duty of preaching the Word of God, not only
when it was in his schedule, but whenever there was opportunity. He said it
was his responsibility to use the Word in all the ways it was meant to be used,
for correcting, rebuking, and encouraging. As a timid person, Timothy would
probably enjoy encouraging others, so Paul put correcting and rebuking
before encouragement in his list. When we know there is a weakness or
something we avoid because of our personality, we need to make the effort to
put it first.

He also told him to use the gift of preaching with great patience and careful
instruction. Preachers can become very impatient while watching their flock's
slow progress. Careful instruction will help them progress more rapidly, but it
is still a job in which patience must be exercised.

He warned that a time was coming when people would pick and choose
those they listened to by the criteria of whether or not the preaching was
what they desire to hear. We are in that day. Sheep will run from the shepherd
that corrects and rebukes to find those that won't challenge them to forsake
their sin. They have pet doctrines that they emphasize above the command of
Jesus to love one another. They can find them on the radio, TV, and in the
pulpit. Notice it says "a great number".

Prayer: Lord help us desire the truth of the Word, especially when it convicts
us.
