How To Make Grilled Asparagus

Getting Started:
  • Get the grill ready by turning the heat on medium-high, it needs to be nice and hot before adding the asparagus.
  • Prepare spears by washing them well and trimming off the woody ends, pat dry.
Basic Recipe Ingredients:
  • 2 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 pound (1 bunch) asparagus
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground pepper
Directions:
  • Toss or brush the asparagus with oil so they’re evenly coated, sprinkle with salt and pepper (you can do this in a bowl or in a ziploc bag).
  • Lay each spear directly on the grill (sideways from the grill direction so they won’t fall through) and cook with the lid open. Turn the asparagus frequently to cook evenly.
  • Grill until just tender and the tips begin to brown (total cooking time is approximately 5 minutes up to 10 minutes depending on thickness of spears).
That’s how easy it is! More tips below…

Tips

  • Tasty Twist: Try drizzling your favorite vinaigrette dressing over the asparagus once it’s cooked, nice kick of flavor! Or you can add it to the oil when coating the stalks (use about 1/2 tablespoon of vinaigrette to 1 tablespoon olive oil).
  • Lemon & Garlic Twist: Add 1 Tablespoon of fresh lemon juice with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, use this to coat the asparagus before adding to the grill. If you’d like a bit of garlic in the mix, add 1 crushed clove. Let the spears sit in this mix for a few minutes before grilling.
  • Less Fussy To Handle: If grilling asparagus is too fussy for you (having to turn and handle each spear one at a time), here’s a tip for you: Soak bamboo skewers in water for about 20 minutes (so they won’t catch on fire), then stick 4 to 5 stalks of asparagus onto skewers (one skewer on each end–spear sideways). You’ll be grilling and flipping bunches of asparagus quickly with this method!
  • Non-stick Spray: A quick and easy way to make asparagus non-stick is to spray them with non-stick cooking spray first (instead of coating them with olive oil). If you do spray them, do this on a plate and not directly on the barbecue since the spraying could ignite a fire.
  • No Barbecue or Grill? Try these in the oven! Arrange oil coated and seasoned asparagus spears on a baking sheet and stick under the broiler in the oven (preheated). Turn once and remove from oven when tender (approximately 5 to 10 minutes).
